Now in its twelfth year, the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate was started by Ricky's wife, Sherialyn, and his friends in memory of the former basketball coach at Northwestern University. Ricky was out walking in his Skokie neighborhood with two of his young children on a beautiful day in July of 1999 when he was killed by Benjamin Nathaniel Smith, a member of the white supremacist Creativity Movement. Within the next several days, Smith also killed a Korean American college student and wounded six Orthodox Jewish men, three other black men and a Taiwanese immigrant.

Because of Ricky’s lifelong love of sports and his compelling work with young people in the community, the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate was launched to honor his legacy and bring attention to the need to combat hatred in all its forms. In 2007, Sherialyn Byrdsong entrusted the Race to the YWCA Evanston/North Shore to steward into the future (read Sherialyn Byrdsong's story here). Today, the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate annually draws thousands of participants from throughout Chicagoland to join together to declare that racism is not tolerated. Proceeds benefit the work of the YWCA Evanston/North Shore, especially in areas of violence prevention and racial equity.
